Transforming Urban Corridors
Dhaka, Bangladesh, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, causing extreme traffic congestion. Situated in the southern part of the city, Old Dhaka is an area where 73% of the people suffer from either physical or mental discomfort due to traffic. The negative conditions are caused by unplanned urbanization, poor transportation infrastructure planning, and surrounding squatter developments. Limited awareness of traffic rules on the part of pedestrians and drivers, a lack of traffic police, a greater number of cars along with arbitrary parking, and the joint use of roads by both motorized and non-motorized vehicles exacerbate the problems.
The goal of this project is to design the urban corridors by synchronizing the new land use pattern and circulation along with the existing physical environment (land use and circulation) to reduce traffic congestion. This will create a sustainable environment and preserve the rich cultural aspects of Old Dhaka. By reducing traffic congestion, old Dhaka can play a leading role in creating a healthier and safer environment free of noise and pollution.
